American Field Service
Christmas and New Years
1920-1921

You remember other Christmas tides-chill mud, bitter sleet, deadening snow, grey homesickness, and the end seemingly brought no nearer by passing days, yet withal, hearts' warmth of companionship and the glow of service with true comrades. Blessed are those unforgettable Noëls of 1915, 1916, and 1917.

"Voilà! Voilà! You have said adieu
To the war-worn fields of France,
Are returned with pride to your own fireside,
Where is warmth and love and romance.
But ere you bow to the Season's toast
Whisper a prayer for a lonely ghost
Doomed to remain at his soldier's post
Far afield in France."

Greetings

The Association wishes you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It would like to give you a larger and more imposing bulletin as a Christmas present, and it would, if only the funds were available. However, this may serve as a reminder to you of a cheery Christmas with blue-coated "copains" in some bleak, war-ridden village of France. Perhaps you shared your "confiture" with the "brancardiers" at a "poste," perhaps you helped decorate a Christmas tree for the children of your village, perhaps you took part in a vaudeville in the cantonment. It may have been cold, but in any case you were warmed by the "bon vin de France." You drained your "quart" to the health of those at home, to the "soldats de France," "à la victoire," "à la tienne, mon vieux!" You enjoyed Noël there in spite of everything. And now, home again with the whole family about you, in you gladness at being where you are, you lift your glasses (at least we hope you can) "au bons souvenirs des belles fêtes d'autrefois."

The Association is going strong, but growing in numbers slowly. Since its inauguration last May there have joined to date something over 700 men out of a possible 2460. In addition we have as honorary members about 188 fathers and mothers of men who died in the Service and some 35 French officers who were connected with the Service during the war.

We think that all of the men want to join and intend to send in applications, but human nature has its peculiarities and one of them is procrastination. We do not wish you to be anything but human, but would suggest that you show a different human characteristic for a moment, that of obeying an impulse. Send your check for $5 to the treasurer, William H. Wallace, Jr., 20 West 40th St., New York. Do it now.

As time goes on your work in the A, F. S. will increase in importance to yourself, and you will hark back to the memories of the good old days, you will tell with pride that you were a volunteer ahead of the draft, and say that you thought from the beginning we should enter the war, and showed your disapproval of the hesitation of the powers that were, by going into it early. As years pass, the Association will mean more and more to you. It will be your one tie to the good old days and as the veterans of the Civil War hold together in the G. A. R., so shall we have a great deal of feeling for the Association, and its meetings and publications will mean a great deal to its. Let's hold it together, and build it up, strong from the beginning!

SPECIAL MEETING OF THE ASSOCIATION

January, 1921

There will be a special meeting of the Association on Jan. 28, 1921, at the Hotel Pennsylvania, New York City, at 8 P. M., for the purpose of incorporating the Association. All members of the Association are asked to be present.

It is necessary to incorporate since otherwise such an association cannot open a bank account or properly conduct its financial affairs under the laws of the State of New York. Furthermore, without incorporation, every officer is liable for all the obligations of the Association. This meeting is in no sense a reunion, but a mere formality to meet the requirements of incorporation.

J. R. GREENWOOD, President.

ANNUAL REUNION

The Executive Committee has decided that the Annual Reunion of the Association will be held in New York City during the last week of April, or the first half of May. It will be similar to last year's reunion, starting Friday and lasting until Sunday, with a show, an annual meeting, section lunches, grand banquet, memorial services, and perhaps an outing or field day in the country. We want it to be as great a success as last year. There will be another special bulletin issued before the reunion with full details. PLAN 'TO COME.

ASSOCIATION BRANCHES

It is hoped that Field Service men in other parts of the country will follow the example of the Far West, New England, New York, and Paris, in organizing branch associations to co-operate with the central Association in its purpose to perpetuate the ideals of the old Service., The officers of the central Association will be only too glad to give all possible assistance to any man, or group of men, who wish to organize the members of the Service in their section of the country, and to select a Chairman, Secretary, and Fellowship Committee to work with the central committees. Mr. Austin B. Mason, Secretary of the Association, will furnish, from the Boston Office at 50 State Street, the names and addresses of Field Service men in any particular section of the country, and will advise what the branch associations already formed are accomplishing and planning in the way of reunions, entertainment of visiting Frenchmen, and the securing of endowments for the one hundred and twenty-six Fellowships in memory of the Field Service men who died in the war.

WHAT THE FIELD SERVICE HAS ACCOMPLISHED IN 1920

1. A three day Field Service reunion in New York (May 7-9), attended by 600 members, honored by the presence of the French Ambassador, the former American Ambassador to France and other distinguished personages, and by cabled messages from Viviani, Poincaré, Deschanel, Clemenceau and other leaders of France.

THE FAR-WEST REUNION

Nothing better shows the wide interest in the Field Service Association than that within a month reunions were held in New York, in Massachusetts, and in California. The occasion for the New England gathering was the visit of General Nivelle, and the other two were in commemoration of Armistice Day. All three were exceptionally successful, and the enthusiasm and interest shown proved in itself how worth while and generally desired our organization is.

The first annual reunion of the Far-Western section of the A. F. S. Association was held in San Francisco during the week of Armistice Day, 1920, and was from every point of view "un grand succès." Approximately two hundred of the Far-Western members were present. It was clearly demonstrated that wherever two or more Field Service men get together there is a communion of interests and of experiences and a bond of "bonne camaraderie" which makes for immediate friendship among men who may never before have met.

The Reunion started on Friday evening, Nov. 12, with a short business meeting in the rooms of the San Francisco Press Club. At that time the Western Branch of the Association was formally organized and a constitution for its internal government adopted, which followed with a few slight changes the form of the Constitution of the parent organization. Richard Ashe McLaren of T.M.U. 133, a graduate of the University of California, who served subsequently as a lieutenant in the Field Artillery, was elected President. For Vice President was chosen Walter J. Gores, Leland Stanford graduate, who had been Sous-Chef of Section Seventy and in the U. S. A. A. S. was Lieutenant commanding Section 636. John B. Whitton, who became an aspirant in French Artillery after serving in T.M. 133, a U. of C. man, became Secretary. Another California man was selected for Treasurer, Edward G. VanD. Bangs, former Chef of T.M.U. Sections 133 and 159, and later a lieutenant in the U. S. Motor Transport Corps.

Following the business meeting there was a smoker with motion pictures of the Field Service in France and a humorous sketch, which brought back fond memories of the good days of work and play among the French. In a few short hours every man with the fund of common remembrance which is the heritage of all Field Service men, lived over those olden times and for that brief time was transported again to the land of long, straight, tree-lined roads and uniforms of horizon-blue.

Next day a large reuniting party went by automobile to the Stanford Campus and witnessed the classic football game between the Freshmen teams of California and Stanford. Saturday night was set for the feast, and a horde of Service men gathered at Marquard's for the banquet. There was more than a suggestion of ancient gayer days and never once did the spirit of the assemblage flag. Dr. Charles Mills Gayley officiated as toastmaster, and Professor E. D. Adams of Leland Stanford, and M. Coppinger, the French Consul, were the special speakers. Kenneth Monteagle's reading of some humorous selections from the History was the particular hit of the evening. Dr. Gayley spoke enthusiastically of the Fellowships plan, calling it the most constructive and appropriate war memorial yet conceived, for the Fellowships perpetuate the memory of those who died through the living American and French youth for all time to come. A committee was elected to carry forward the Fellowships idea in commemoration of the California men. The committee includes Messrs. W. H. Crocker, J. B. Miller, F. F. Peabody, W. B. Bourn and C. M. Cayley.

From New York came this telegram of greetings:

"The Executive Committee of the American Field Service Association in session in New York recalling immortal hours in France which we have shared together, sends greetings to the comrades assembled in San Francisco and wishes for this reunion great and enduring success.

Greenwood, Dudgeon, MacDougall, Barrett, Wallace, Mason, Dodge, Bigelow, Galatti, Andrews."

Sunday morning Bishop Nichols of the Episcopal Diocese conducted a very impressive Memorial Service in Grace Cathedral. Tribute was paid not alone to the honored dead of the Field Service, but to the Field Service itself because of America's debt to it, as "the greatest single factor in the crystalizing of sentiment in this country for our entry into the war, and the consequent saving of the 'Soul of America."

THE NEW ENGLAND REUNION, 1920.

A reunion dinner of veteran members of the American Field Service was held in Boston at the Algonquin Club, on Dec. 3, a fortnight after the California gathering. It was arranged not only as a "get together" for the old camionneurs and ambulanciers, but also, and especially, to honor General Georges Robert Nivelle during his visit in Boston. The General was met at the station upon his arrival early in the morning by a committee of A. F. S. men, consisting of A. Piatt Andrew, Richard C. Lawrence and Austin B. Mason, who accompanied him to the Copley Plaza where Consul Flamand gave a breakfast to the party.

In the evening, before the dinner, a business meeting was called to form a New England Committee of the Field Service Association, and the following men were elected to carry on the activities of the organization in the local district: Richard C. Lawrence, Chairman; Mayo A. Darling, Secretary and "La France" Correspondent; William DeF. Bigelow, Manager of Fellowship Campaign.

The large dining room of the Algonquin Club was arranged for the dinner which followed the meeting, but proved too small for the enthusiastic crowd which turned out, and the overflow had to be cared for in rooms opening off the main one. The hail was decorated with French and American flags, the A. F. S. service banner, and the fanions of all the sections. Mr. Robert Winson, Jr.'s band added greatly to the festive air of the occasion, he having very kindly volunteered to supply the music. With Mr. Durant Rice at the piano they played French airs and popular tunes throughout the dinner. At the head table were: Mr. Lawrence as toastmaster, Vice Admiral H. P. Jones and Rear Admiral Robeson, representing the Northeastern Naval District; Brigadier General Ruckman as Commander of the Northeastern Department; William Roscoe Thayer, who called himself, in his gracefully amusing and a-propos talk, "a mosquito buzzing about the head of Boston," in an attempt to arouse it to activity, in the early months of the war; Dr. Alfred E. Stearns of Phillips Andover, who did so much to aid in the sending abroad of an Andover unit; Lieutenant Oliveau, formerly one of the heads of the French automobile school at Meaux; Mr. Andrew, Mr. Galatti, President Greenwood of the Association; Mr. Wallace, its Treasurer; Mr. Mason, the Secretary; Mr. Mayo A. Darling, who was Chairman of the Reunion Committee, and Mr. Donald Pitkin and Mr. Bigelow, of the committee.

At the beginning of the dinner, upon the suggestion of Mr. Lawrence, everyone stood for one minute in silent tribute to the Field Service men who died in the war. A telegram from the Far Western or California Branch was read, which said, "We salute General Nivelle, and send cordial greetings to all," and gave at once that satisfying feeling, which united the far scattered sections in France, of being linked by a far reaching organization.

There were some 150 members of the A. F. S. present, and as honorary members the fathers of several of our number who died in the war: Mr. Bailey, who came all the way from New Jersey, Mr. Dix, and Mr. Hill. At the close of the banquet, after all had joined in singing a memory-reviving "Madelon," Mr. Greenwood spoke upon the aims of the Association and its possibilities. He was followed by M. Pierre Lepaulle, who spoke most admirably as a holder of one of the Field Service Fellowships, of which there are at present thirty. M. Lepaulle was sent from France to Harvard for study. Dr. Stearns told of the days when he urged his Andover boys to join the Service, and they were aroused to form an entire transport section. Mr. Andrew came next with reminiscences of the old days and haunts in France.

At this time General Nivelle arrived, accompanied by M. Flamand, the French Consul, Colonel Azan, General Parker of the State Guard, and Captain Estes of the Northeastern Department of the Regular Army. Colonel Azan spoke from the heart, saying that "the breeze which carried Americans to France came first from Massachusetts and the Headquarters of the American Field Service," which last he said was "a symbol to France." After Mr. Thayer had spoken, General Nivelle, who had been greeted with a great burst of applause as he entered the room to the accompaniment of the Marseillaise, talked to his "chers camarades" in French, recalling how he had seen the Field Service cars in the midst of his battles to recover the Forts of Vaux and Douaumont, and expressing the belief that it would be as easy to divide France in two parts as to separate America from France.
